I want to start this post off by saying that stenciling is the worst. The. Worst. I woke up on a Saturday morning and thought I could run out, buy supplies, and be done by dinner. Two days later, I was finally finished, at MIDNIGHT.
After buying several different kinds of paint, in search of the perfect metallic paint, I finally found a silvery glaze that didn’t contrast too much with the white. You would think that since the room is so small it would be a quick process to actually get the paint down, but my stencil didn’t do so well with corners, or edges, and that’s basically what this room is made of.
Anyway, that’s my stencil disclaimer. It really sucks. You have to be really careful, or you’ll be like me and be doomed to notice some goof ups forever, so think carefully before you decide if you actually want to do this.
All that being said, I’m so happy with the final result. I wanted to stencil because I didn’t want to put a lot of stuff up on the wall – and it felt blank without any kind of texture. I went for a really subtle, almost tone on tone color, because again, I didn’t want to add a lot to the room, just make it a little more interesting. The paint itself is shimmery, which is really pretty when light shines in.
I feel like this room is finally coming together – I still have quite a few things I want to do, like get rid of the nasty rugs that can’t stay clean for more than five seconds, and put a larger piece of art over the couch (and make the couch better) – but let’s be honest, I’ll probably never be totally satisfied with any room in my home. I like tinkering, what can I say! The stencil makes the room feel special, and cozy, and it’s inspired me to go more neutral with my decor.
One thing that was kind of funny – almost everyone I spoke to about stenciling (like the guys at Lowe’s) seemed to think it was outdated. Someone even told me that they never heard of people stenciling any more. I was pretty surprised, but I guess after seeing for myself how labor-intensive it is, I could see why people might only do it once. Would you ever try stenciling? Have you? Does it get better?
I wanted to update everyone and let you know that Robbie was found safely yesterday! I love a happy ending…
