Flower Hour

How do we feel about gifs? I’m obviously a big fan… this one is mesmerizing me as I try to write. So, like most people who have souls, I’ve always liked flowers, but it’s only in the past year that flower arrangements have really started to interest me. I was in two weddings that required a lot of hands on flower help, and even though I’ve never felt like flower arrangement was what you’d call a strong suit of mine, it turned out to be super fun. There’s something so peaceful about the whole process, and when you’re not doing it for someone’s special day, it’s pretty low risk. Flowers look really pretty even if you cut them too short!

I decided to start exploring this new interest (and conveniently, always have beautiful flowers brightening up the apartment) by challenging myself to make arrangements with grocery store flowers. My hope is that it will be a fun way to be creative, and explore other interests without me turning it into some sort of goal, which is what I usually do when I want to try a new hobby. I take a calligraphy class, I want to be the best calligrapher alive, I re-explore knitting and I make everyone I know a knitted gift for Christmas…

I’ll be sharing these arrangements here occasionally – this is a Trader Joe’s bouquet of ranunculus, hydrangea, and spiky flowers – I don’t know what they are! I was a little disappointed in the quality of the TJ’s flowers – I am writing this three days after I bought them, and they’re already looking pretty wilty. I was going for something that looked like I could have just gathered it in a field, and I thought it turned out pretty okay, although like I said before, it’s hard to mess up when you have such pretty flowers. It has felt super luxurious to have flowers in the house just because, I must say. Even though I’ve been trying to bring more life into our apartment with house plants (uh.. don’t ask me how my fig fiddle’s doing. It’s going to be fine.), flowers just feel like a special occasion! And I don’t have to worry about killing them.
