I have a confession to make – I have hated when bloggers post mix ‘tapes’ in the past. I thought it was dumb, and I didn’t listen to them. In fact, I wouldn’t really call myself a ‘music’ person. I mean sure, I played piano for 10 years, and sure, there are artists that I love, and I enjoy a concert as much as the next person, but I’ve always had a complicated relationship with music, stemming from feeling like what I ‘should’ like and what I do like are sometimes different. I like Katy Perry, there, I said it, take my blog away.
However, I’ve started listening to music more and more as I work. I used to have TV on in the background, but a) I ran out of shows that didn’t make me want to scratch out my ears, and b) while I still like having the TV on when I do certain times of work, at other times it felt like a slow drain on my attention to have people talking in the background.
Let me make a bold (ish) statement: Pandora is the worst. There, I said it. I used to love it, but more and more all of my stations sounded the same, and I got more and more bored with my music. If I go to the Mumford & Sons station, it’s because I want to hear more artists who sound like Mumford & Sons, not because I want to hear more Death Cab For Cutie, ohh my goddd.
Anyway, then I started listening to all those mixtapes, and found my way to 8 tracks, and then to Spotify – and I get it now. I love when bloggers make mixtapes (most notably Breanna Rose and Melissa Vega). Listening to mixes that other people make has been such a great way to find new music, and it’s made some long days a little more fun.
Obviously I had to get in on the action – so every so often you’ll get some new tunes. This first mix features lots of strings – guitar and banjo – and makes me think of summer nights in the Carolinas, sitting on the porch drinking ice water and listening to the cicadas.
I hope you like it – and if you’re already on Spotify, my username is thealisoncitron. Friend me, so I can listen to all of your playlists!
