I’ve been actively trying to be craftier lately. It started when I realized that if I wasn’t working, exercising, or cleaning… I didn’t really have anything fun to do, besides watch TV like the couch potato I not-so-secretly am.
I’ve known how to knit for years, but I lost interest because let’s be honest, there are only so many scarves a girl can make. A couple weeks ago, I saw a cute hat, and realized I could probably make it. I had to learn how to cable, and once I realized that you can basically Google any stitch and learn what to do, it opened a whole new world of possibilities up for me.
David is always really supportive of my craft projects, even when they kind of suck. He thought my hat was really cool, and since he doesn’t really have a winter hat (for the three days when you actually need a hat here…) I asked him if he wanted one. He said he wanted a Life Aquatic hat and a quick search revealed a free pattern. It doesn’t quite look like the hat in the movie, but it’s close enough. Also, I learned that the stockinette stitch, when done in the round, is different from doing it on straight needles. I learned that after almost finishing the hat, and realizing it looked totally wrong. And having to rip it all out. Whoops!
I’m excited to branch out from hats, but I’m not sure where to go from here. It would be fun to knit a sweater (like the perfect slouchy polka dot sweater) but that seems a little ambitious/I probably wouldn’t finish it until the spring, and I really want to cable something. Maybe I’ll make a sweater for Caspian. He’d love that.
